DONNA'S LAW FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION
Preventing Suicide Through Voluntary Firearms Purchase Delay Act
Dear Representative,
I am writing to ask for your support in passing Donna’s Law, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that offers a compassionate, practical, and effective way to reduce gun suicides without infringing on Second Amendment rights.
Donna’s Law has already been adopted in Washington State, Utah, Delaware, and Virginia. This legislation allows individuals who fear they may become suicidal to voluntarily place themselves on a confidential self-registry that prevents the impulsive purchase of firearms. Participants can later revoke their status, with the waiting period for removal varying by state—seven days in Washington, for example.
This law respects privacy, protects Second Amendment rights, and provides an opportunity for those struggling with suicidal ideation to safeguard their lives. Notably, Washington State law ensures all paperwork is destroyed after removal from the registry, and a participant’s use of Donna’s Law cannot be used against them in court.
The data is clear: firearms are the most common and lethal means of suicide, which accounts for the vast majority of gun deaths. Donna’s Law is an essential tool that empowers individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves during moments of vulnerability.
Donna’s Law is supported by numerous leading organizations, including:
• The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
• The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance
• The National Alliance on Mental Illness
• The National Education Association
• Suicide Awareness Voices of Education
Our state has the opportunity to join this growing movement and demonstrate our commitment to saving lives. By adopting this legislation, we can reduce gun suicides while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners.
I hope we can count on your leadership to make our state the next to adopt this innovative and life-saving measure. I would welcome the opportunity to work with you and your team to advance this critical legislation.
Thank you for your time and for considering this important issue. I look forward to hearing from you.
